Lantern-lit food alley at night

The story

A phone, a plate and the right window

Photographing a meal in a café
Shooting a dish at a restaurant table

Why I started

I wanted the photo to taste like the meal

It began with a bowl of noodles that looked grey on my screen and golden in real life. I moved one seat closer to the window and everything changed.

Since then I have chased that light everywhere: kitchen windowsills, café corners, steaming night stalls. I shoot on a phone because that is what you have in your pocket too.

The kit here is what I actually carry. If it is in the bag, it has earned its place.

“I never shoot food I would not happily eat. If it is good, the light will find it.”

What I care about

How I choose the kit

Light first

Nothing replaces a good window. Gear should help you use the light, not fight it.

Light to carry

If it does not fit a jacket pocket or a small bag, it stays at home.

Honest picks

I only list what I use myself, and I will always answer questions before you buy.
